World Suicide Prevention Day
World Suicide Prevention Day takes place each year on September 10 – a day on which the European Humanist Federation wants to emphasise the importance of humanity and community. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) first proclaimed September 10 as World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003. On this date events all over the world, primarily organized by health or suicide prevention organizations, are reminders about how we look at our fellow humans, how much attention we pay to others’ wellbeing and how we can help those affected by suicidal thoughts.
The numbers are shattering: Every 40 seconds one suicide is committed. That means every year around 800,000 people take their own lives. That is why suicide is classifies as one of the biggest health problems in the world.
