Slovak Parliament rejects bill on restricting access to abortion following campaign by rights groups

Posted on the 05/12/19

The European Humanist Federation welcomes the rejection of the draft proposal to restrict the access to abortion by the Slovak Parliament. The proposed bill was the 6th attempt this year to limit safe and legal access to abortion in the country.

Earlier this year, the EHF took part in the international action #NebudemeTicho – #WeWontBeSilent in solidarity with women in Slovakia, together with 35 other civil society organisations. As part of this campaign, the EHF signed a letter calling on members of the Slovak National Council to reject this regressive legislative proposal. EHF’s Slovak Member Organisation ETHOS supported this action.

It is a success in the fight against attempts to restrict access and information on sexual and reproductive health and rights. Such attempts are taking place in many European countries. We need to remain vigilant.
