Living Together in Peace

Living Together in Peace

Posted on the 16/05/22

May 16 is International Day of Living Together in Peace. This day serves to spread awareness for international reconciliation, peace and sustainable development. Another focus on this International Day is on the encouragement for forgiveness and compassion between individuals and communities. The UN explains the background to how the International Day of Living Together in Peace was established: “Following the devastation of the Second World War, the United Nations was established to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war. One of its purposes is to achieve international cooperation in solving international problems, including by promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.”

The protection of human rights and (the achievement of) fundamental freedoms has always been at the forefront of the EHF’s attention. Living according to humanist values means no individual should ever be discriminated against because of their race, sex, language and religion. And it means living together in peace. Achieving a life together in peace has to become the highest priority for our world community and for us Europeans especially in this time that so brutally displays the devastating decay of humanity in war.
