EHF General Assembly and Annual Conference 2017
The EHF’s 2017 General Assembly and Annual Conference were held in Wroclaw (Poland) from Friday 19 May to Sunday 21 May 2017. Wroclaw is not only a pretty city, it also has a very interesting history: it has contributed greatly to the rise of humanism in Europe as it was one of the most important centers of secular life in Germany during the 19th and 20th century. Many Poles migrated to Wroclaw after World War II, mostly from Lviv (today in Ukraine) and Vilnius (today in Lithuania), both major Polish cultural and university centers. Traditions carried by those migrants contributed to the special character of the city today.
Modern Wroclaw, home of the Polish Rationalist Association and European Capital of Culture in 2016, is known on one hand as the most liberal city in Poland, and on the other hand, home of the most significant nationalist movement. This historical heritage, combined with the current political situation in Poland where various fundamental rights are challenged (including recent attacks on women’s sexual rights), make it a very interesting place for humanists to meet this year.
