The EHF supports #FreeMubarakBala week of protest
Mubarak Bala, the President of the Humanist Association of Nigeria, was arrested in his home on April 28, 2020 following allegations that he insulted the Prophet Muhammad on social media. His legal team has been unable to access Mubarak and are asking authorities to clarify where he’s being held. He was previously detained in 2014 on the grounds that he was an atheist.
Humanists International and other organisations have called on the international community to join in a week of protest to help #FreeMubarakBala. The EHF joins the protest and invites its member organisations and supporters to sign the statement to stand up to violation Bala’s fundamental rights.
Bala has been the victim of death threats and harassment since he renounced Islam in 2014. Most recently, commenters on his Facebook post have called for him to be killed, while others have threatened to burn down the police station in which he is being held and kill him were he to set foot in Kano.
